New Year, New Bras: Making Breast Health a Priority

It’s 2024, and taking care of our bodies is more crucial than ever. It’s time to focus on an often overlooked topic—our bras and, more in particular, the importance of knowing when it's time to replace them for the sake of our breast health.

Everyone has that favorite bra that's been through thick and thin, but even though it feels like an old faithful, it might be letting you down in more ways than you know.  Wearing the same bra for too long can have an incredibly negative impact on your breast health.

The Support We Deserve:

Bras are about so much more than style; they are our trusty companions providing the support we need to be comfortable through the day. Over time, however, the elastic fibers in bras lose their elasticity. Straps stretch out, bands loosen, and cups fall out of their original shape. When this happens, the support your breasts need and once received from your bra diminishes. It’s time to move on with a new bra.

Listen to the Signs:

Your body often shares signals that it’s not getting the support it needs. For example, if straps are falling off your shoulders even after adjustments, the band is riding up in an arc on your back, or you’re on the tightest set of hooks, your bra is no longer a healthy option for long wear on your body.

The Health Connection:

The wrong bra affects our posture and more importantly, breast health. Once they lose their elasticity and support, you’ll find that wearing them becomes painful, and though you might not see it right away, your breast tissue will be damaged over time. Your breasts deserve the best, so don't compromise on the support they need. See a bra fitter and find out if you’re in the right size and shape as well if even newer bras are giving you the same issues.

How Often Should You Replace?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, but as a general rule of thumb, consider replacing your bras every 6 to 12 months. As women, our bodies change frequently as our hormonal cycles progress and our bodies gain and lose muscle and fat. Listen to your bras and your body—replace pieces sooner if you notice signs of wear and tear or if your body undergoes any changes. We recommend seeing a fit specialist once or twice a year to ensure you’re still getting good support.

A Final Note:

Investing in high quality bras and rotating through several bras weekly can extend their lifespan, as they’re not getting stretched out daily. Wash them by hand or in a lingerie bag on a cool, delicate cycle and air dry to keep their integrity. Your bras work hard for you, so treat them with care and they'll reciprocate. This year, honor the body that takes you through life, and let's raise our cups (pun intended!) to the bras that support us and make a healthier, happier you!
